Public transport ticket prices in euro currency approved
As reported earlier, starting from next year, the local government of Riga will introduce a new system, which will allow Riga residents to pay less in public transport. For them, the price of a single ticket in "Rīgas satiksme" buses, trolleybuses or trams will be EUR0.60. Those passengers not declared in Riga will pay the whole price of the single ticket, i.e. EUR 1.20. The Commission for Licensing Commercial Passenger Transportation Services gave its conceptual approval to the above basic tariff of public transport tickets on October 7 this year.
On the same day, October 7, Riga City Council adopted regulations amendments, which enable a reduction of public transport ticket prices for Riga residents as of January 1, 2014, together with the introduction of the euro. Amendments to Riga City Council’s binding regulations provide for a 50% reduction in ticket prices for those persons having declared their permanent residence within the administrative area of Riga city.
The amendments also provide for a 80% reduction in prices of tickets for students, parents of 3-5 children, teachers and other categories of passengers, who now enjoy a 60% of the one-month ticket price.
Personalised e-tickets, which will also fulfil the functions of "Riga resident’s card", will be used to identify Riga residents. At present, customers may apply in advance on "Riga satiksme" website for receiving the above card and Riga resident’s status. The company informs that almost 17 thousand persons have already applied.
